>>6021218>mesuring and at juding and putting down valuesyou’re not describing anything not found in monochromatic painting
you’re inventing a nonexistent intrinsic difference between tonal drawing and monochromatic painting while pretending linear drawing shares all the same prerequisites and isn’t largely a different set of skills with some overlap
you’re also backpedaling hard from you must be at least good to you can’t be dogshit
the gesture bit is not worth responding to
for portrait painting you need to understand value and measuring, the medium is utterly irrelevant, you can learn those with crayons, wash, oil, charcoal etc, it being learned through “drawing” mediums is completely irrelevant and a fantastic painter does not necessarily “draw well” as in has the ability to produce appealing “drawings”
the only requirement to portrait painting besides knowing the medium is the ability to lay down appropriate surfaces of value, not lines
in fact, if you watch the vermeer documentary, you’d see a completely untrained normalfag with ZERO understanding of fundamentals or drawing skill replicate his paintings through understanding of his process and materials alone
