Isn't it weird that it is mostly americans who revere these artists? I wonder if they have some kind of bias. I don't imagine Russians in an atelier studying leyendecker

what do you mean? stare at a cornwell, real people don't look like blocks of color, it's a result of posterization + stylization. no actual human being looks like a leyendecker painting, they're strongly abstracted, its towards realism but still extremely stylized

mead schaeffer work goes from more realistic to more graphic, but it generally his color work does the heavy lifting in terms of graphical style.

anyone that is interested in advancing past shitty symbol drawing styles (like anime) is going to study the golden age american illustrators because they are the peak of art in recent history.

All of the golden age illustrators are stylised but leaning heavily towards realistic. That's why I like them. They prioritise shape design over what their reference actually shows, in a time where the camera existed.
