Take Ruan Jia for example, do you really think he paints of his paintings by just pulling them out of his ass? No, he uses reference just like everyone else, even mangakas use online doll programs or human reference.
Drawing without reference, is usually only something you can do after decades of drawing, it takes time, so there's no point in rushing it :)
