For illustrations I've done it's usually in the style of hearthstone cards, so clean stuff that reads well with a basic backround, sometimes they give me specific concepts to work off of but usually I'm just given a vague description and send it back and forth to the client until they're happy with it, same with UI elements. And the reason I don't do it full time is like I said I first of all enjoy my day job enough so I'm in no rush to quit plus I'm still fairly new so I don't have a steady flow of freelance clients yet, one month I can make what I make at my job currently doing a few hours less and other months I get nothing, but eventually when I have to start turning down clients I'll make the jump and quit my normal job.
400 euros per day is what very good clients pay, average dayrate for indie artists is problably around 150-250 euro but it all depends on the clients, I also know of friends of my friends with 7+ years of experience doing concept art for 600-1000 euro per day consistently but that's like if you're both really good and reliable and have the experience to demand higher pay. And the day rates usually in my experience only apply to concept and UI work, illustrations usually pay a flat 150-400 per illustration, but often times for stylized indie stuff you can pump them out in a day no problem.
