Mentioning action cartoons does bring up another big difference that I notice with Japanese work over American ones: Which is their sheer variety and flexibility. While American comics tend to have similar visual styles that adhere more to reality, action manga can look however they want, and still keep a proper tone. This is not to say all comics look the same, they don't, but the DC/Marvel duopoly doesn't do very well in showing that.
