Texture is wrong on the middle one: the torso turns, so the texture should recede (gets smaller) as it reaches the edges.
As for painting, what you can do is:
- make small value thumbnails, working with a small number of value
- make small full color thumbnails, identifying the main masses, ignoring all details.
Working small scale allows you to test multiple solutions. You can do them from imagination, or use any kind of reference material, or a mix of both.
Beside the stiffness, this is decent-looking.
