It's so demoralizing bros. Anyone know that feel? The worst part is i've been doing art casually basically my whole life. It looks nice but it's not up there you know?

not him, but anything tightly rendered that isn’t an anime girl with no background tier will take 20 hours at minimum in my experience
that’s “days of work” right there, that’s not anyone’s magnum opus, people literally spend years on a single painting

Don't polish turds. If the painting isn't working, it's a fundamental issue not just minor adjustments. You progress faster by reiteration. Repaint it again or paint a new project. Acquire more experience that way instead of fixing one painting over and over and wasting time.

The thing is i think the painting is starting to look good once i get at it, i dont even realize it's meh until i finish. Usually when i realize its meh is when i look at different artists who are really good. But without that comparison i always feel i'm doing dandy.

Well yea but what references where there 500 years ago or how ever long it was? So that's fucking sick, think of all the super realistic paintings like from the renaissance. Those dudes needed to have some knowledge in order to pull off those paintings.

first of all, before you even start painting, you make sketches, studies and thumbnails, sometimes the entire painting is taken 90% to the finish before being started “for real”, the mona lisa in particular is layers upon layers of oil, it’s not an mspaint drawing
the sistine chapel took 8 years in total
pic related, while not a painting, took almost 37

tl;dr: “days of work” is just prep
