I want to make one of these big wooden bears, 3'+ tall. Where do I get such a huge piece of wood? What types of local places could I check for hunks of wood?

I'd have to chop down a tree to get that kind of density. Already fallen trees are degraded and can't be worked with. Don't feel like chopping a tree.

You're fucked. Those things are done with chainsaws, or a saw, hatchet, adze and a bunch of chisels. Ones worth a fuck cost as much as a half decent chainsaw. It's like trying to carve a spoon without a saw to collect the material so you can work it green and that stupid spoon carving knife.

Anyone who cuts firewood will have some stumps and logs, tree services might drop some off for you or let you pick it up at the job if you get on good with the owner. Sometimes you don't even have to pay for it, usually you will but it's shorter cuts that can't be used for lumber and the expense of firewood is in splitting it.

Use a hand saw then. and some big chisels. you can get huge chunks off by sawing and splitting.
