Standard practices in digital workflow weren't common, there was no higher education in it, and early photoshop was for editing photos. People were still scanning linework and digital painting has had a rocky history and adoption. There was a lot of tech like light pens concurrent with something resembling and functioning like the current wacom. The whole field was much smaller and limited to the more cutting edge companies doing graphic design, tv production, video games, and specialized technical fields.
2005 isn't early by a long stretch. Look at the switch to digitally inked capeshit in the 90s. It was pretty well established by 2005.
