have you considered cleaning up your sketches rather than redrawing everything a second time? it takes about the same amount of time to do both but cleaning the linear often yields better results.

Well that's the point of the study, you're copying the character, face & all. this gets you used to doing his face shape, and from there you will want to experiment different face shapes. A good thing to remember is male faces are angular, not soft like women.

I don't recommend tracing as a rule but it might help you to trace the head just once so you can mentally see the shape better.

ya i was trying to draw more expressions since a lot of people's critique is usually that i draw neutral or simple faces so i wanted to experiment with using reference on more exaggerated ones but it's real tough since i still struggle rotating spheres to get a good angle of the head

Lately I've been doing one drawing at the start of the week, grinding specifics for one week that I point out the next day then trying the same character or something similar at the end of the week.

Now I gotta figure out how to shade clothes how the Kyoani artists do it with their dozens of shapes but first I gotta figure out how to not suck at anime boy faces.

I still can't draw cute boys or anime very well but I feel like after one week I'm getting closer..Left is March 26 and Right is today.

Am I on the right track if I'm shooting for how Kyoani draws their men?

Yeah I got told they were too far apart last time I posted a drawing in this thread. My eyes are fucked. Last time I didn't flip my canvas enough. This time I flipped it too much and couldn't tell how fucked they were. I think I gotta try and apply some Reilly rythmns to my faces or something to keep things in check

I mostly do small stuff on my table or outside things that catch my interest. Things that you can sketch down in a few minutes just to get a feel for forms and how to measure with your eyes.
Also 90sec gesture drawings helped me, looking at bodies from a lot of angles an seeing how everything connects.

You could also put your sketch directly over the reference and see which parts don´t match up. Then you look at your original drawings and see if they have similiar "problems".

But don´t get to hung up about it, from what i have seen in the threads you are making good progress.

I almost forgot to post him, nowhere near as cute as Arlo, but he has his boyish charm. This is my greaser goblin boi Johnny boy. Goblins are shapeshifters in my story so his human form looks somewhat based on Marlon Brando.

goblins are also Italian American, which came from a bad joke involving the word "gabagool" and spiraled out of control from there.
