From what i remember reading; Multiple Illustrators get a description of the card and they illustrate it multiple times, then the artists wich illustration gets printed gets paid in full for their work while others get paid the minimum.
If you're one of the illustrators whose work didn't get picked for print, you still might get paid if that card gets a reprint/variant, but you'd still get paid less.
Any illustrator that shows competence will get commissioned more often, of course, but still with the artificial competition so as to not waste any money on artists, when their marketing team will waste thousands of bucks on shitty ad campaigns or pandering to trannies.
