I think you will find appeal on stylization, simplification, uniqueness and a consistent art direction. Dont get me wrong, Im not telling you to make disgusting calarts
shit or generic weeb shit; my point is that you will get appealing results if you make something unique that focuses less on details and realism for the sake of design clarity, style choices that stand out and easy to grasp works, even if the style is somewhat realistic, it should work as long as it stays true to those guidelines

Speaking of appeal, what's /ic/'s thoughts on Irasutoya's works? I see a lot of sovl in his works despite being more clip art and corporate-memphys tier than actual art, but in fact I think it's a push on the right direction for clip art and mass marketable styles, it stays easy to use while keeping a high amount of life to it.
I honestly like it.

I think it has to do with how much energy you put into each line. The messier the better, but I'm not sure if that's really true. If you look at some great art, you can see a lot of times that the lines are just total chicken scratch, badly erased, or they just go in a completely random direction. I'm sitting here for hours trying to master drawing circles and squares and people are drawing beautiful images with free flowing strokes that seem arbitrary. Its like when spongebob was showing squidward how he draws a circle and he starts with the face. I don't think there ARE any fundamentals, its all just line quality and appeal.

I think appeal is just an extension of who you are. If you have no friends, no girlfriend, you're just a loner, then by definition you have zero appeal.

An exercise that I like to do is to find an artist that you find really appealing and try and recreate a work of theirs from reference. Forces you to learn how they do shading/color palate.
You don't have to recreate the entire piece, just enough of it so you understand the tools the original artist was using.
