Why are 50% of threads about making money from art? The commonality between all the "make money from art" threads is that everyone who posts in them seems fucking miserable. Like, art is fine enough as a hobby, isn't it? Hobby runners don't expect to go to the Olympics; they just run because it's fun. Why can't artists do the same?

People like Rodin aren't really motivated by money. They're motivated by being the best or by saying something original or whatever. Money is a distraction from that goal. These people may become rich later, but only as a result of succeeding at their main motivation.
It's like how if you're a desperate loser who is solely motivated by finding a girlfriend, you may find some other desperate loser woman to date you. But if you are motivated by living a rich and full life, and you succeed at that, then you can later find a fantastic girlfriend who also has her own rich and full life.

Because all zoomers and 80% of millennials are "artists" who think they're gonna be pros someday. It's also why you see that no one has any taste anymore and suck up to anything studios shit out nowadays. No one wants to "ruin their chances" by saying turning red is ugly and embarrassing because some sensitive animator might remember block you and blacklist your art handle. Add to that that most of them can't do shit other than draw and you got a perfect mix of: 1. people with art goal oneitis and no back up skills, and 2. people whose only hope is making it at art or they will end up working at Target or Gamestop.
Hence, everyone and their obsession with monetizing their art.

I saw a guy post a video where he showed up in blackface and said something like, "I'm proud of being white and an overall racist, I'm also sexist and generally dislike gay people." Just bald-faced admitting what he thinks. He was a young guy too. I really admire his social suicide like that. Imagine the freedom he feels afterward. Thanks bro, goals. I'm 32 and just getting into the hobby, and the money talk makes me feel down. It's like the absolute best I could ever do money-wise is a late bloomer trajectory like Henri Rousseau. Who was always referred to as the "tax collector", cuz that was his day job. Whereas if you do it as a hobby then who fucking cares how old you are. In fact it's more inches to your dick to start later, since then you know you made a conscious adult decision to do it. Rather than just eased into it thoughtlessly as a child.

I keep getting people asking for my socials, asking if I take commissions, outright asking what my commission prices are, etc. I don't make money from it because I am sucked into a roaring vortex of anxiety every time I think about making social media accounts, setting prices, promoting my work and interacting with customers (even though I've been a salesman in a boutique before, and I was pretty good at it, and on the rational level I know it can't be too different, something about selling something I made myself makes me anxious).
