I think the "students wrote the bridgman books" is just a myth or ONLY applies to the posthumous publications like Complete Guide to Drawing from Life which collected multiple books together and reordered the contents to make more sense. Even then the actual words were bridgman's, only the ordering was edited.

You can see the books were all published before his death (1943) except the "Complete Guide to ..." book.

I've been drawing a bit from his Hundred Hands book the past few days. The going rumor is that these sloppy images of his were never intended to be used outside of a classroom setting where he'd be there providing context as they were drawn, but his students basically stole these pictures from out of the trash and pieced them into a book. I kind of doubt that's true but I wouldn't be 100% surprised if it was, either.

bridgman's students, the ones who pieced this book together with their shitty notes and the drawings bridgman made, are absolutely fucking retarded (bridgman may have been shit at teachting too I guess). It's easier to understand when you know what to take out of it and what to look for. It helps if you read jack faragasso's figure book first, which acts like a stepping stone into understanding bridgman. Marshall Vandruff is releasing a youtube series to help decipher bridgman too

Also, reading the books is fine but if you feel like reading is making you want to stop then just copy the drawings and don bother reading.

I think it's good that you're getting angry at the book OP and you should keep trying if you want to. Maybe it's a problem but sometimes it's a sign that you're having to fight through confusion to reach a new understanding of stuff you probably already know frankly.

I don't think it's an ESL moment, you can tell from the way loomis and bridgeman write, that what they're writing is easy to understand for them, it's written for what they think they would need if they were starting again, not what you need.

Bridgman was a notorious drunk and was horrible at articulating information when trying to explain his process. There may be timy little bits of info here and there that are useful like to think of the elbow as a hinge etc, but 95% of his writing is absolutely worthless.

The books are for drawing from, not for reading, any decent figure drawing instructor/storyboard artist/comic artist will tell you this.

Most of the text is just describing the drawings in simple english but with correct anatomical language.
You can skip it because you can work out most of the meaning from the drawings themselves.
But the advice to skip the text is so you don't throw the book away or get bored because its better to lose 20% of the book through skipping the text than lose 100% of the book by being defeated by the text.

No its a terrible description and horrible to read from. Marshall Vandruff even said so on one of the podcasts with Stan. Bridgeman is for drawing from and analyzing the drawings not the words. He also mentions it on the bridgeman series he just started on his youtube.

I'll just agree to disagree. I think every student should skip the text if they are willing to draw everything in the book. But I don't think the text is "bad", it does exactly what it needs to do and even clarifies some of the drawings.

But I also think Harold Speed and Arthur Guptill are great authors. Maybe I'm just used to literature from that era from growing up reading H. G. Wells, Lovecraft, Robert E Howard, John Steinbeck, Frankenstein, Dracula etc
