How much time do you spend drawing people from imagination, and how much time do you spend drawing portraits of real people? I get that the latter helps with the former, but what's more fun to you?

Looking at reference and using trial and error when designing characters is really no different from people who pull from their visual library. It's not over, you can do it.

I don't usually have a model unless my roommate models so usually from photos, or honestly, I usually go on Wikiart and paint versions of other people's paintings. I like doing reduced versions of Academic and Realist portraits.
