1.) He isn't a master of construction by any means, although he is skilled to be sure. Someone like Krenz, or Scott Robertson, or Sinix, on the other hand, has a much higher mastery of construction
2.) He didn't practice drawing from imagination.
Imagination drawing, cartooning, making appealing linework, etc., are all themselves separate skills that need to be practiced.
The issue with Stan's construction skills is that his relation to the concept of "construction" is very stiff and academic, and has never evolved past that point. It's hardly any wonder that he sucks at cartooning, he's never really learned to express himself.
