Feels like the commercialism of the early 1900s where fine artists got slaughtered in favor of illustrators who could sell a product.

Nothing wrong with that. At the end of the day greats will always blow through whatever the flavor of the decade is.

Good news is that coom artists are gonna print, weebs won't have to rely on poorly translated pdfs and illustrators will have more aspirations than "uhhhh riot games or wizards of the coast".

I look forward to the new era.

noobs come in, get filtered or git gud, and leave only the shitposters behind.
Then the next batch comes in and so on.
Cycle this every few years with lower results.

And in recent years 4chan has just kinda died out, its the same on all boards.

There was a time where concept art speed painting stuff was the only digital painting content on YouTube. Now there lots of different kinds of stuff on all the social medias. People come here to get good for a lot of reasons now. Pornfags are probably the loudest because their addiction has melted their brains. They have delusions about making money cause they saw a couple Patreon artist making big bucks. Traffic on this board doubled after the lock downs started.

The art industry is bigger than ever and there's loads of money in videogames and film. There's more learning resources and schools that focus on the industries with actual working professionals teaching. It's easier than ever before to get in the industry because you can learn and work from home. With independent stuff anyone can start up a Pateron or Kickstarter for their own personal projects. Even pros are choosing to do that now. Obviously you need some kind of following first. There are loads of opportunities if you have the skills and an audience.

Ever seen a movies or videogames credits? There are dozens of artists required on every project. More and more projects every year. 10,696 games on Steam last year. Even if 90% are shitty indie projects, that is still 1000 real games. Same with consoles too. Netflix makes 100 original shows every quarter. There's plenty of industry work. Plus there are an infinite amount of niches you could fill for indie projects. Everyone thought rubber hose cartoon style was dead, then two brothers made Cuphead and now it's getting an animated show.
Every industry artist giving advice on YouTube says there's plenty of work, only saturated role is character artist since everyone want to do it so it is highly competitive.

I'd actually say background artists are stupidly in demand for 2d animation. 2d animation isn't nearly as popular anymore but for every 10 character artists.
