Here's a huge tip that no one here will listen to.
1. Reach a competent level (that would be /int/) with at least 6 portfolio pieces
2. Find a mentor by e-mailing professionals and showing your portfolio, be shameless about it and just message anyone until someone replies back
3. Apply the advice

Do it weekly as you continually sharpen your skills, this method is free and will also grow your network.

For number 2 I think it was Kienan Lafferty who said literally just apply to any job with an art test and do the test even if you know you won't get the job. He said a lot of studios that don't pick out portfolios will just give you a generic art test template and it'll force you to do "client" work even as a beginner.

I think clint cearley posts his old MTG card briefs he gets from WotC for people to try and do and compare to the real card.
