Pursuing an ideal will grant your art a sense of purpose, but will also make it unapproachable
Pursuing emotion will make it engaging, but will also cause it to feel trivial
The greatest pieces of art strike a balance between the two.
Compare the type of art coming from places of strong masculine sentiment vs strong feminine sentiment. You may notice it's in the intermediates where the truly captivating artwork emerges.
Not to shit on art from either extreme, both are needed and showcase interesting features. However I wouldn't recommend the unilateral approach if you want to keep growing as an artist (and as a person).
