They're supposed to challenge you by forcing you to implement spatial relationships with how form is being tilted, and the negative spaces surrounding the figure.

You're missing the point, you need to draw figures doing these poses so you can understand how form is affected with the pull, stretch and compression from the body.

"gesture drawing" is a scam sold by art schools to make art students think they're being taught something. Note how you can't tell what a good gesture drawing is from a bad one.
I'm not arguing that drawings can't/shouldn't have gesture, but going out of your way to grind "gesture drawing" is completely pointless.

It does not only happen in gesture drawings. Those for longer drawings have this sickness as well. I suspect it comes from French influence from the nineteenth century. The poses were done for multiple people polishing up their copying skills, and the poses did not have to be useful lr fit into a painting seen from the desired point of view. Combine this with French ballet which has a connotation of being artistic to regular. They are interpretive of a mood but not useful for narratives.
