At some point, there's just so many lines, allowing a 5/10% interval from the lines basically allows you to place things pretty much everywhere on the canvas.
Which doesn't mean there's no composition rules, useful grids or that graphic design is useless either.
Just grab a good composition book and study it thoroughly.
