If the lightsource was facing away from the blue, then the only light the blue is getting is whats reflected off of the ball, whereas the magenta side is bouncing light directly onto the side it's on. The blue would be a lot weaker. I wonder if the creator of this exercise even intended to have a strong independent light source, as these exercises usually assume gentle ambient light to let the colored objects do the speaking.
