why do we pretend to still care about the old "masters" when most of them are literally mogged by people in the front pages of deviantart, artstation and pixiv?

I disagree that they are mogged, but also think that caring about old masters on this board and even among trad circles is mostly pretending, as the extent of their study into old master is when a teacher mentions to study them for lighting or anatomy.

European painters from late medieval to 1700s. Most people's idea of old master would be those in the high renaissance up to baroque and to rococo. 1700s is barely old master, as are late medieval who are not very popular today. 1800s are a category of their own, but ic is more familiar with 1800s artists and wrongly call them old masters.

They are in the category, and are often who are referred to, especially when it comes to drawings. Old master paintings certainly include their works, but I find people tend to associate the term more instantly with Baroque painters because of the heavier use of earth tones. This is partly because the earth tones with golden glow has connotation of vintage, and partly because of prejudice that bright colors did not exist before modern times, and Renaissance tend to be more colorful.
