>>5935992I'm a civil engineer and I think I have some idea why a good portion of those people go into art.
At the end of the day, I think basically everyone is a creative at heart. We were all creative as children, but school and adults really do a great job at stamping out that creativity. They say, "Focus on math and science, and you'll end up with a well-paying and secure job."
That's true. I did end up with a well-paying and secure job. I have a good amount of money.
But they never tell you how mind-numbing and meaningless your work is and the more mind-numbing and meaningless it becomes over time.
These people want to use art as a way to get back in touch with who they really are. Art is an antidote to the monotony and dread of the capitalist system. And that's just in engineering. I can only imagine the torture of being a code-monkey, whose only purpose in life is to make multi-billion dollar tech firms more money. It sounds like a truly demeaning existence.
On the other hand, a lot people are still trapped in this capitalist mindset and still just want to go into art for the money. They want to become illustrators or concept artists to make money. For me, that's not wanting to become an artist. That's you coping with your existence and not doing art for the sake of doing art.
