Copy master works as accurately as you can; start with monochromes, learn to convert colors to monochromes, and progressively add colors in the mix.
Unless you want to paint one type of thing in one style, in which case you can re-use someone's gong-fu, there's no secret bullet to draw a variety of subjects with the ability to stylize it with freedom, you just have to do work.
That being said, have a look at muraljoe's YouTube tutorial on waves: he definitely has developed a great technique for it.
