there is gotta be a reasonable middle ground between quitting your day job to do art and only ever doing it for fun.
I felt the term professional deal with a broad range of area of competencies that's not readily demonstrated by just a few images, but sometimes it has more to do with consistency and ability to deal with "work" aspect of it rather than strictly quality of your art. also I'll mention that I improved very slowly, because I am not a particularly diligent artist, I pretty much just draw for fun, and didn't have any particular goals. I've seem people much younger than I am and started later in life that made great strides in relatively short period of time because they are aware of what they wanted to improve on, and they didn't necessarily quit their day job.
