>>5932317>>5932324I think part of this problem is that the style is so closely associated with grayscale that anything other than grayscale just looks fake. But it can look good, I think Monster Musume colour pages look really nice. Tho I think that's because they were MADE to be colour pages from the start. There's different thought processes going on when you have to make something look good with just black and white as opposed to when you can also use colours.
I also think colouring comics is a waste of effort. Its hard enough to put out 30 pages worth of illustration in just grayscale, adding colour to it is just isn't worth the time cost. The art gains so little, sometimes it even loses appeal and it takes insane hours to colour all that.
I think your point about them trying to be "anime" not "manga" is accurate. They don't colour their comics like how japs would do it (see picrel) but how an animation frame would be coloured, which just doesn't work in comic format.
