Teacher/mentor/coach and learning environment
These are probably what most aspiring artists are missing, you can only get so far by self learning.
Every successful athlete always has a coach guiding them, a musician always a tutor or instructor. Without an educative figure you are wasting a lot of time trying to figure stuff out, lots of trial and error, because thats the most basic way of learning. Having someone to guide you speeds up progression dramatically saving a lot of time.
Take Starcraft 2 during the glory days, Koreans were the dominant figure in the esports scene. Aside from their asian work ethic most people credit their success thanks to their e sport scene as a whole, they had dedicated facilities for training, coaching, and just being in a competitive environment in general. Nowadays that concept isnt so uncommon anymore, esports teams all have such factors readymade for their athletes. Like how esport teams have their dedicated gaming houses to foster such environment.
But of course with art it isnt much of a team game, but those things are still vital for improving. As a self learner, we have nothing of the sorts. Nobody to guide us and no competitive learning environment to foster growth.
Not to say you cant make it as a self learner but I think its all about time, if you have those advantages you improve faster, thus increasing the chances of making it.
Most people give up because they have no time, reality catches up to them and they are forced to face it. Thats why you get littered with threads on how to improve the fastest.
So, consider the circumstances and ask; do you have the time to make it?
