I find it very difficult to capture something scary in a drawing or painting. Some exceptions include Saturn Devouring His Son which has a genuine creepiness to it, Junji Ito's work sometimes hits the spot but is more often fascinating rather than unnerving. Other than that manga with its highly clear and abstract visual style seems to go against horror.

What are some tips for illustrations that are creepy, preferrably line art but paintings are also welcome.
