Is using photobashing for background art really that bad if it doesn't look too obvious or cheap and you're the one taking the photos?

Oh yes OP, it's really that bad, so don't do that, do everything manually by hand instead, in fact digital art is cheating because you're not mixing your own colours, in fact you should probably go and collect your own pigments too because it's simply lazy to buy ready made paints from a shop. I'm top serious about all of this.

No one draws backgrounds anymore. Barely anyone draws anything. They trace blender models or use clip paint assets. Lot of have buckley tier drag and drop eyes and mouths for manga. Everything shit out on twitter is traced shit. Hell, even coloring is relegated to AI and some touch ups after now.
