>>5885565>Literally knows nothing about art history. Vienna was EXTREMELY conservative m8. The Vienna Secession happened 10 years before Hitler applied, when Klimt and the Art Nouveau crowd rebelled against Griepenkerl and the rest of the conservatives at Academy of Fine Arts Vienna and made their own school.
Griepenkerl was the one that gave Hitler the second chance and told him to come back in a year with a bunch of figure studies and portraits. Hitler did one shitty Jesus and Mary painting and that was pretty much it. He spent most of that year trying to make his music major roommate write an opera for him.
Plus in 1907 Griepenkerl was struggling to deal with teenage expressionist prodigy Elon Schiele and was desperately looking for students interested in his style of romanticism and realism, pic related. Schiele had turned him off entirely from bringing on more modern artists and he never did again. He was basically looking for exactly what Hitler liked to think he was. But Hitler was a delusional lazy narcissist that couldn’t and wouldn’t draw people.
Griepenkerl on Hitler’s application in 1907: “Sample drawing unsatisfactory. Too few heads."
In 1908, after Hitler refused to draw more heads: "Not admitted.”
And the best irony is that the school Hitler could have been accepted to was the school that was founded 10 years earlier by Klimt and secessionists. His art was way too shitty for the best fine arts program in the country, but the art nouveau bozos and expressionists would have welcomed him in, and he just didn’t go.
And it wasn’t really even a MODERN ART BAD reason, he had a lot of modern art in his portfolio and didn’t start pretending to hate it until he got political. He didn’t go because he was terrified of failing and would rather not have tried than tried and failed.
Hitler in Vienna 1906-19whatever is a good read
