What’s your recommendation on how to spend a year focused solely on developing art skills? On finding peers developing in tandem on the same assignments? On finding reliable mentor figures that will correct your misinterpretations as soon as they appear? Not shilling, I’d love an alternative if you’ve got one. But the way I see it, I can do this for a year thinking about nothing else or live in isolation, without review or oversight, focusing half my time on development and the other half on paying the costs of living.

It really is funny to hear these pros claim you don't need a degree when 90% of them have gone to art school. It's really all just a marketing strategy so they can appear relatable and keep selling their courses and brushpacks to beginners who believe it's all they need to land a job at Blizzard or something.

Internet "mentors" are a scam. Find someone where you live or travel to meet them and train with them.

Not exactly, it's just that self learning is 20x harder. You draw something incorrectly in an art school and the teacher points it out minutes later. If you're teaching yourself you might not realize the error for several months, possibly years

Completed Erik Olson’s perspective coursework, as well as Scott Robertson’s How to Draw. A bit into human anatomy so far, but I’m considering focusing on digital tools/color/rendering first and just doing hard textures for a while without much gesture or organic textures/figures. This all said, I’ve had good work ethic this far and intended to have a grasp on core concepts by the time I applied or attended, though I’ll have to adjust to plans now.

maybe try to find an atelier if any are still open in your area, barring that, scott eaton's anatomy course is very good so you could do that and supplement it with whatever life drawing you can actually find

nma is also an incredibly good deal for the amount of content it provides so that is an option as well.
the nice thing about painting is that you can pretty much learn all the year 1 fundamentals just by studying things lying around your kitchen and if you already have a good basis in drawing it really will not be that difficult. if you combine that kind of fundie grinding with pretty much any generic concept art curriculum through gnomon/brainstorm/rutracker/whoever you should end up with a strong enough skillset to be at least entry-level employable or get into any school if those ever reopen.
