why is it that most people seem to stagnate after they’re good enough to get jobs? you always see these people say they got good in a year or two, but they usually stagnate for years or even decades after that.

also another thing, i suspect that most of them have been drawing for several years before those “one or two years”, just maybe no where near as seriously. that’s still a lot of mileage. even if they were still bad after it, they were still way ahead of any normie who started from zero (which i feel is how they’re trying to come across)

progression is hard, learning something new and sucking again sucks, so when people get decent enough they stop studying as much, & people have a voice, when that voice is expressed there's nothing left to say. You set out to do your thing, "I want to make SC2 stuff in a picasso style" and once you do that and make that thing that expresses who you are, now you have to find something new to like or just make the same things over and over, finding something else & reinventing yourself is difficult. Who you are & what you like has come to the surface and finally been expressed, I don't have too many other interests so I'm stuck doing the same things.

they didn't necessarily stagnate, even if their output looks similar they are probably putting out the same quality of work faster and with a high level of consistency. beyond that though, most people don't really want to dedicate themselves to the arthermit studygrind indefinitely, they get gud and established enough to be comfortable and then go back to having a normalfag life

Art is time. The reason professional artists “stagnate” is because epithet aren’t getting paid to improve or practice, they’re getting paid to be reliable and consistent.

They're comfortable where they are and while their style might not change much, they've probably gotten faster with putting out that quality of work with fewer mistakes.

When you're doing art for someone, especially dealing with money, time become more of a factor than "How can I change my style in new ways today?" If anything that gets worked in slowly.

Drawing 8h+ a day for other people leaves you little time to grind on your own stuff
And usually customers don't like you saying "Hey I need to practice X so I'm gonna practice on your work and maybe make X different to what you wanted"

these two degas paintings are four years apart, would you say that he was stagnant in those four years? does one show any significant improvements over the other? in the end they are both expressed so beautifully, does it matter whether or not he was stagnating?
to what end do you keep "improving"?
