it's about minimalism, but begin at the face. give yourself just enough pixels to make an expressive face with minimal pixels, then flow out from there. I prefer to stick within the 16x32 dimension for character map sprites, since it's sort of a S/NES norm (my personal aesthetic) but I still let myself go a bit out of those dimensions since I know that it was only a strict number due to CPU restraints which aren't an issue now. I still prefer to go for authenticity though.
