Avatar the movie impressed normies because they intentionally lowered the realism and found the perfect amount of so realistic it is impressive, but not realistic enough to fool your eyes. We had the tech at the time to make the CGI flawlessly blend in and they held back because it would have looked too realistic.
As a artist who competes with cameras, your job is to make something look better than real. Master artists in the past made everything overly shiny. Humans love shiny things. Modern great artists fuck with colors to make the viewer feel how colors are connected to emotion and mood.
