Everyone has their own level of acceptable effort that they will consider to be "good enough". If you haven't ever pushed beyond this self imposed limit and seen what you can actually get done in a day, week, month you won't progress as fast as you want to.
People who really dedicated themselves completely to some kind of weekly after school training for sports or music or even just learned to study efficiently on their own without needing constant supervision have such a huge advantage over everyone else. They know that daily self discipline and good habits lead to long term goals being met.
They transition into something like art and it's like they are on cheat mode.
