You don’t need to better than anybody but yourself. And even that rule has wiggle room. If you want to make a shitty drawing, make a shitty drawing.
Set out to make a shitty drawing! Get comfortable with making crap with zero stakes for awhile. Then once you’re actually producing anything you should naturally just start falling into the reward-reinforcement cycle of looking at problems at fixing them and feeling ok. Make some schlock ass scribble drawings and then once you have anything to be working on you can treat them like a rough sketch and just build and improve and make your own thing.
Or whatever you want to do. What’s actually important is that you abandon your reactionary narcissism and delusional self-expectations and ego bullshit. If you’re looking at someone’s work that is better than what you think you can do, and you’re not stoked and trying to pick apart what they did so you can give it a goof, you’re doing how you think wrong.
