Even with the example of hand-ground paint and shop-made canvas, no artist in the past made their own canvas, because specialists of that craft did it better than painters without the equipment or craft knowledge could. Whereas hand-ground paint can be done better than modern mass-produced paint without much training.
As for tools having inherently special about them, not much. But materials, something that digital lacks, yes.
