As someone who doesn't have aphantasia I can tell you it's just an excuse. I can picture whatever I want in my mind, vividly colored, in an actual setting, moving. I can create a story and watch it, and none of this applies to my drawing. Having some short video or picture in your head will never compete with actual photo/video reference, let alone life reference, and you know just having a picture of something doesn't mean you can draw it. If I could picture a sheep and then draw it that means I'd be able to look at that picture you posted and draw that sheep and grass field flawlessly, even as a beginner.

I actually can't say much about my imagination. When I close my eyes I can see weird shit like lolis shitting in each others mouths(the colours are usually toned down) but when I open my eyes I can't really imagine anything.

If I close my eyes then I literally see something between 3 and 4. This is not in my mind's eye but with my actual vision, it's superimposed upon my eyelids. It's also possible to see this superimposed upon paper if I focus enough. In my mind's eye, it's something between 5 and 6.

if visualization was really that powerful, they'd be able to just trace what they imagine and get better results

I will argue that low visualization is actually an asset for artists. As others have said in this thread, there is no correlation between vivid visualizations and the ability to actually draw these visualizations. They exist in some sort of nebulous, dream-like way which can't be reliably referenced when you're actually drawing.

I would argue though that a person who can conjure up extremely vivid visualizations is exactly the least likely person to become an artist and to stick with the creation of art. This is because they will constantly face disappointment as their art falls so far below the quality of what they are able to visualize. As a low visualizer myself (4 or 5 on the chart), I can say that what I love most about drawing is that my drawings look better than the crude and very unstable images that I'm able to visualize. I see art as a way to stabilize and improve my deficient visualizations, almost as a form of external daydreaming. If my visualizations were crystal clear though, I don't know that I would ever have been drawn to art in the first place. I probably would just be content with daydreaming.

Is aphantasia the new "I'm a social anxious introvert" excuse artists are going to use to avoid criticism?
I don't think I have it, but my ability to imagine scenes to draw has dwindled in the past couple years.
Probably due to age, and the fact I don't consume as many new shows, movies, games, etc. to give me fresh ideas.
