They clearly pulled off the technical aspects of where 3D differs from drawings
To the point where it looks about as good as EnE. I know there's no CG credits on EnE, but Asuka choking the angel looks a bit like CG. Like how James Baxter animating White Diamond looked CG even though you can outright see it was done in pencil.

It's an odd thing, to say that 2D animation can look TOO good
But it's very much a thing nowadays, thanks to the abundance of CG in anime today.

I think your brain can just detect perfect 3d vs imperfect 2d.
2d never quite goes where your brain expects it to go so it engages it more and your brain "fills in the blanks". 3d is so close to perfect that it triggers the uncanny valley.

There also might be a trained response going on, similar to how films shot at 24fps look "better" than films shot at 48fps or 60fps because you associate cinema with low frame rates that require your brain to fill in the blanks.

Disney used to do 3d backgrounds and then print the wire frames onto physical cels and ink&paint them as any other animation frame would be done. It kind of makes it blend in better. Iron Giant the robot was 3d but was done this way too.
So perhaps just the texture of real paint and imperfection of a human hand inking the lines is enough to fix the uncanny feeling.

A lot of movies use CG effects for the most mundane things these days and no one realises it, so you can definitely already trick people with 3d.

Problem is, that's done in the OP webm quite believably. Yet the 3D still sticks out like a sore thumb.

That's with live-action; something that's already three-dimensional.

Arcsys stuff still looks 3d but they get very close, certainly much better than any other anime style video game.
They use a lot of tricks like camera angle specific keyframes that only work because its a 2 axis fighting game with locked cameras. Also taking out frames so it looks like it is 12 or 24 fps (but runs at 60fps as required for fighting games with frame based gameplay mechanics)

This doesn't even have the anime framerate, but it looks better because they distort the characters enough that they match Tsubasa's trademark wonkyness
It still isn't perfect, but it's better
