Understand how light works on 3D objects
Learn to see objects as 3D objects
Once you have both you will are able to portray objects with shading and lighting.
Then you need to understand color (big can of worms) how they are affected by light and the color of things change the mood and the scenery.
Then combine your knowledge color with the previous two. Which is probably the hardest part to achieve.
Knowing those will likely get you render properly. Of course it is easy to just say these thing like this they take a lot of practice.
