That’s essentially how all galleries operate. They let you hang your shit there and if it sells they get a cut. Cuts down liability and expense for them.
But more to the point: the reason VG blew up posthumously was because A: he was an art hoarder that never sold anything, B: his brother was an art dealer. C: He was ahead of his time and it was like his entire life’s work was released to the public all at once led to surging demand. D: His life story was heavily included in marketing and promotional stuff about his work, adding even more perceived value.
When he died his art dealer brother inherited his entire life’s work, and he got to work with promoting and showing the works to his industry friends. Then he died. And his wife inherited them and did a good job of not flooding the market and keeping demand up.
