Basically, you do your commission, and then put the same effort on doing something completely different to that. And next week something different to that too.
After some time, I started getting DM's "Hey, do you do this? Can you do that?"
If you show you can do several stuff, eventually, you'll get close enough to a commissioner's likings, and he'll ask if you can close that gap.
This is valid too for your commission sheet!
