I don’t understand the measuring with the pencil technique. Why measure and draw a vertical line for example and then measure something else and see how many times it fits into that vertical line instead of just using the whole pencil as a ruler?

What am I getting wrong?

Taking your picture as an example, how would the whole pencil be any useful at all? I guess that measuring things using small chunks as a measure is more useful than large chunks.

The Vertical line serves as reference and then you add what you've measured to the vertical line.
I don't think It would be really useful to do it on a milk carton unless it had a weird angle.

You sound like if you never applied the technique before and you just read it, maybe if you do it a couple of time you will get the hang of it. You're complicating yourself over something that is supposed to help you understand the angle of what you're drawing.

Yes but I don’t understand why I have to use that vertical line as a reference and add to that when I can just measure everything the normal way using the pencil as a ruler and copy everything to my paper.

If you have gradations on the pencil, you can do that too. But often that's not necessary, and using a finger to mark the measure is good enough.

But measuring like has limitations, especially on small measure, where the measurement error becomes non-negligible. Same for angles. Vertical/horizontal plumb lines are quite efficient and less error prone OTOH; well-trained eyes can grab proportions/angles where measuring tools would be limited.
