It's most efficient, takes less time to produce, and does its job. Most people will look at these for only a second, why does it need to be fully detailed works of art?
It's the same for everything else basically. Buildings used to be highly detailed works of art inside and out, now we build them as simple as possible as long as it serves its purpose.

I dunno how popular it is. Seems like most people hate it. Advertising seems to love it though. Probably because the simple shapes are easy for a non artist to replicate and the (usually) weird skin colors let them make things seem ethnic or not based solely on the viewers perception. So basically it’s easy and you can get easy brown skin points.

Most buildings were never highly detailed works of art and acting like a modern mcdicks building on the side of the interstate was ever going to be on par with something like an opera house or mansion is retarded. More average old houses and buildings from the late 19th early 20th century had more ornate architectural elements, but in many cases, they were just as mass-produced as suburban tract housing is today. Like in parts of nyc, especially Brooklyn, you'll see entire blocks of old townhouses that all have the exact same trim details because they were developed to provide enough housing for the ballooning population. In the 1920s you could buy mass produced kit houses that were cut in a factory and sent to you in a boxcar, then assemble like it was a piece of ikea furniture after you had the foundation laid. There are still high-quality custom architect-designed buildings being built all the time, but they've never truly been the norm.
