A small highly details portrait on a two inch square will be hard, and require sharp tools and a steady hand, yet small landscape thumbnails are relatively easy.
There are a few books advising to copy simple drawing on relatively big scale for beginners, as this simplify proportions errors (if you do a portrait on a A4, it's very easy to make a 2mm error that will be highly noticeable; a 2mm error on something 4 times bigger will be much more negligible).
