Do your best to make finished pieces. You get to practice ALL of those things and you get a finished product to look forward to. You may not like the finished product overall but you'll definitely find things in it you like and it's just generally a good practice to get into the habit of finishing things.

Personally, I never did studies, I found it tedious and boring. I only ever made finished paintings and I think it helped me discover exactly what kind of art I really enjoyed making. Like if you spend all day focusing on how to draw a hand or a head, you're not really being creative, you're just replicating shit. Focus on your creative ideas and do your absolute best to bring them to reality.

I don't know if this would work for you, but it sure as hell worked for me, and it's an opinion I don't think is often brought up here.

Just make finished pieces but approach it thoroughly and professionally.
Do a lot of composition thumbnails, do research, draw the research reference, do value studies with your refined thumbnails, do color and lighting studies with the value study you like best.
When you are ready to start the final drawing, take photos of reference of yourself in the poses you need, take photos of someone else with the build you need, use 3d as ref if you have no access to models, use 3d as ref for the environment/background/interior/props if needed. Include this ref earlier if you need to.
Then do some drawing studies where you explore important focal points in your piece and give them more attention and research. Try different facial expressions or arm/hand arrangements for the focal figure. Try implementing a detailed texture or design like a pattern on a dress or some area where you would usually leave it simple. Experiment and add a little bit more than your previous finished piece.

Look at Gurney's Imaginative Realism to see all of the ways you can research, study and experiment with a piece. (obviously think of the sculpture/clay modeling parts as also a 3D sculpting option)
Look at how Dean Cornwell and Leyendecker prepared for their illustrations. Look at how much work you could do before you ever even begin the illustration itself.

Abstracting out the fundamentals and practicing them in isolation as most courses teach is a way to make it easier for you to start attempting finished pieces later on. But for some people they might not understand this or they simply learn faster by jumping in and doing something practical right away by doing everything at once instead of separated out and student oriented.
