can't risk something looking strange because it can make someone uncomfortable!
the original doom is so iconic because yeah. it wasn't afraid to get weird.
Japan has that too, but nowhere near as bad
look no further than to old DND art compared to modern to see this progression

Dude.
You're talking about a nation of people who'll start crying and sending complaints because an actor didn't react the right way to an event.
Japan is super pigeon holed when it comes to commercial works. There's a good reason 99% of anime looks identical.

Meanwhile in the west you have everything from weird ass nickelodeon monstrosities, to Disney hyper appeal, to semi-anime niches like star wars animations and the last avatar.

literally everybody complains when a classic game gets remade, there's nothing western vs eastern about it
also a lot of japanese games are eyesores technically, look at the terrible popin in nier automata and boring square city buildings. gestalt/replicant is a better game too

Japan have mastered the art of commercialization. They don't do art because they "like" it, they do it because it keeps the industry going. And opens more possibilities for merch, which is the key reason as to why anime is made. Anime itself is a piece of merch for the manga. While we're just starting to see these "Marvel as lifestyle" things, in Japan that's something that has been going on for decades. Everything you do an use, from the moment you are born to the moment you die, can have a cute anime character stamped on it.

second point on SOTC, in the ps2 version the muddy graphics and LoD made it so some colossi felt even larger and vaguely outlined and "foggy" until you were straight next to them. obviously on PS4 that's gone, so they feel less freaky
