The reason you see all this talk about commissions on here is because /ic/ is full of maladjusted people with some sort of insecure attachment disorder that want to slave over work for someone for peanuts so they can get some personal recognition for a glimmer of a moment in time until the process just repeats itself ad infinitum because they're trying to fill a void. Same with the obsession with getting a following.
You're right OP, there are tons of successful artists that use the methods you listed. They don't do commissions, yet still make over $100k with their work because of the alternatives you mentioned. You literally cannot get to that level off commissions alone, there is simply not enough time in the day.
