I used only homemade turmeric and copper oxide ink, plus a ballpoint pen, so my colors were limited.

I've used tumeric before you can also use powdered spirulina as a green and bendryl coating for pink
That way you've got orange, green and pink, technically all the secondary colors
Ibuprofen coating is also brown/red
Chrolophyll is also a good green, and quite stark at that
Coffee works for browns
Chili powder works for red

I also used to break open dollar tree's AA batteries, the really cheap ones cause they were filled with black powder that i would mix into a black ink

the toxic levels are off the charts for that one, at that point better to just buy far less toxic paint lol

Imagination is there. You just need to work on technique. I really want to love this but it needs better line work and rendering. I highly recommend you look up artists who use limited pallets like Dr. Seuss. They tend to use a lot of white to show highlights to contrast the limited color. The lips need a thinner line. Remember lines are shadow so only place lines where shadows fall on the underside of the nose. Crisp shine spots in the eyes will give it that spark of soul. The hat is my favorite and I love the soft shading and highlights. If I were you I would use white out to gently apply highlights to areas. Please just cheat and use white out instead of trying to create a thick white paint that won't get muddy and ruin everything.

Yeah I’m just getting started with ink and I keep having to remind myself not to just make line drawings. The hat’s my favorite part too and it’s definitely no coincidence it’s where I used the least lines. Thanks for the Seuss rec, that might be a great reference.

dude no, that sounds fun, messy and a hands-on brand of awesome.
kinda different, but i was always happiest when in life drawing i got covered in conte, or when doing wall murals i used to get paint errywhere while using my hands to blend sometimes where the brushes just couldn't produce a smooth enough shift on their own. i'm with this guy. alchemy's the best. >>5838451

this is a good one. as a kid i bought charcoal sticks and pencils and was overcharged a ton by my local art shops till i started to use the great heaps of wood we burned every time my family went camping.
>one night i made a ton of really well recieved illustrations in an almost festival atmosphere for a large scale public audience with a nice sturdy charcoal chunk from our fire. any stranger in that beachy state park interested and walking up who found and donated a nicely sturdy charcoaly stick got a pic of their choice done with their tool. i was drawing on huge slabs of bone white driftwood till a park ranger donated a huge roll of newsprint paper of the type my grandparents' generations' art heavyweights kept around. then they ran, got permission, and opened up to everyone a warm cozy public parkhouse where the rangers liked to chill and we all bumdled im to find sofas tons of fuzzy blankets and a beautiful natural oak table, so i had a great drawing surface, and someone ordered a bunch of pizza, and an off duty ranger broke out the hot chocolate and we made a party of it through the night with the big door thrown open to the warm night so people could mingle and watch the live arting. i dashed out illustrations like mad and gave away everything i drew that night. my hand and imagination were in sync from the adrenaline and i felt like one of the beach dogs presented with a quadruple icecream cone. a ranger i respected hugely got a big wall hanging of a comp with the local wildlife and geographyey loved. i came across them sixish years later and they told me a cool story about it and how they now had it hanging in their new digs' when i came across them six years later. yep. campfire charcoal is the best. tldr derp.

You can do that for drawing charcoal easily, but to make ink out of it you need to boil it and add gum Arabic, which I’m still waiting on from Amazon

oh, sure. just checked an ancient usb and unearthed a maybe fifteen, twenty year old photo my sixth grade teacher must've taken on me and my class's first day playing with charcoal. doodled a lot of people then. can't believe i actually found something, because i only used raw charcoal when i was a little kid (13?) for a year or so before finding conte. green text was a good day during that years'-end summer vacation.
